The car hire companies especially the national companies have locations in all states and just about in every town however they still need those cars back in the original place. If everyone decided to do one way rentals some locations would be without vehicles. If the car rental company needs to relocate a vehicle they will often offer the renter a cheap daily rate with no relocation fee. In the state capital cities that have tourist locations nearby often car rental companies need to get the vehicles back to the capital city i.e. Brisbane to the Gold Coast and vice versa Sydney - Newcastle.
You can check with the local independent operators but normally they will not have the resources to offer one way rentals at realistic prices, so in most cases the national companies will be your best bet. Using a comparison website that gives you all the alternatives in the one search is the way to go. You enter the locations, dates and times of your travel requirements and the site will search and present the available vehicles in price order and the total price advertised inclusive of any relocation fees.
If after you search and there are relocation fees listed try adding a day or two to your hire. Sometimes the hire company will have a minimum number of days for one way rentals. It may still be cheaper for you to hire for an extended time and not pay relocation costs. Remote travel will be a different story. In most cases if you are travelling, say from a capital city to a remote location, you will almost certainly be guaranteed a relocation fee. If you are travelling the other way from a remote location to a capital city you may pick up a car very cheaply.
Car Rental companies will still try to make the most of a rental deal and will offer all sort of add ons.For example, GPS ( Satellite Navigations Systems), extra drivers, insurance options to reduce your excess in the event of accidents. All of these options will improve the daily rate for them. You shouldn't be surprised at this they are in business after all and need to make a profit so they can supply a service to the public.
It makes sense to check out one way rentals the next time you are planning an adventure. The airlines offer great one way flights and if you can organise a one way car rental it could be a great holiday trip. Fly to your favourite holiday destination then drive back slowly as there are probably many places on the way you have not seen. This is a great way to do a road trip with children; the one way drive is easy on them and you. Make sure you book as early as you can to get the best deals; last minute car hire booking always cost more. When you collect your car ask for an upgrade - be pleasant to the sales staff in most cases they will try to accommodate you but don't be disappointed if they cannot do the upgrade, but it is worth asking.
